How Market Research Supports Nike’s Objectives
My proposed product, Nike Smart Running Shoes, would combine traditional running shoes with built-in sensors that track distance, pace, cadence, stride length, and running form. The information would connect to the Nike Run Club (NRC) app, allowing runners to monitor their performance and progress.
Through my market research, I identified active adults ages 18 to 45 as the primary target audience, including runners, athletes, gym members, and individuals interested in fitness technology. This audience supports Nike’s objectives of developing innovative products, strengthening consumer relationships, and improving digital experiences. Nike, Inc. (2025) emphasizes innovation and creating stronger connections with consumers as important parts of its business strategy.
My research also suggests that combining footwear with fitness technology could help Nike expand its product offerings while building on its existing NRC platform. However, additional consumer surveys and product testing would be necessary to determine actual demand.
Current and Future Industry Trends
One of the biggest trends I identified is the growing importance of wearable technology and personalized fitness tracking. According to the American College of Sports Medicine (2025), wearable technology ranked as the top fitness trend for 2026, while mobile exercise applications and data-driven training also remained important.
These trends create an opportunity for Nike to develop products that provide consumers with more personalized fitness information. In the future, artificial intelligence, real-time coaching, and improved sensor technology could make smart footwear even more useful.
However, these developments could also increase competition and development costs. Nike would need to continuously improve its technology while keeping its products affordable and easy to use. Another challenge is convincing consumers that smart shoes offer additional benefits beyond the information already available through smartwatches and fitness applications.
Legal, Ethical, and Industry Standards
My proposed marketing strategy would focus on digital advertising, social media, fitness influencers, product demonstrations, and promotion through NRC. I would recommend a premium value-based pricing strategy because the additional technology would likely increase production costs. Nike could distribute the shoes through its website, app, retail stores, and selected sporting-goods retailers.
An important part of this strategy would be following legal and ethical marketing standards. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC, n.d.) requires advertising claims to be truthful, supported by evidence, and not misleading. Nike would need to test its sensors before making claims about accuracy or performance improvements.
Consumer privacy would also be important because the shoes could collect personal fitness information. Nike should clearly explain what information is collected, how it is used, and how consumers can control their data. Additionally, paid influencers would need to disclose their relationships with Nike, following FTC endorsement guidance (FTC, 2019).
Research Limitations and Challenges
One of the biggest limitations I encountered was the lack of primary consumer research specifically focused on smart running shoes. Although industry research supports interest in wearable technology, it does not confirm that consumers would purchase shoes with built-in sensors.
Another limitation is determining an acceptable price. The technology would likely make the shoes more expensive, but I would need surveys, focus groups, and prototype testing to understand how much consumers are willing to spend.
Competition also creates uncertainty. Under Armour previously introduced connected footwear but later discontinued manufacturing the product and ended connected-footwear support in its MapMy applications (MapMyFitness, 2025). This raises questions about long-term demand and customer expectations.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I believe Nike Smart Running Shoes have potential because they combine fitness, technology, and personalized performance tracking. My research supports the product’s alignment with Nike’s innovation and consumer engagement objectives. However, further research is necessary before making a final marketing decision. By understanding customer needs, protecting consumer information, and offering features that provide real value, Nike could create a product that stands out in the competitive fitness market.
